Frank Kovalik Nov. 23, 1924-Jan. 21, 2013

Francis R. “Frank” Kovalik, 88, of Catawba Island passed away on Monday, Jan. 21, at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. He was born on Nov. 23, 1924, in Cleveland, the eldest son of the late Frank and Mary (Madger) Kovalik.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton, on Friday. Burial will take place on Monday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. Online condolences may be expressed at


Columbia Gas of Ohio to launch pipeline improvement project in Linden Street area

Columbia Gas of Ohio will begin work on a pipeline improvement project in Port Clinton this week. The company will replace 10,830 feet of natural gas mainline.

The project, centered on Linden Street, will include portions of streets West of Maple, East of Beech, South of E Perry, and North of E State streets.

The $550,000 project will replace existing steel pipe with specially designed plastic pipe, impacting 150 customers.


Ice fishing at East Harbor

Though the lake is not yet ready for ice fishing and though prospects do not look good with the warming trend this week, on Saturday there were ice fishermen at East Harbor State Park.  Several had portable ice shanties and some braved the cold and sat on buckets.  Some of the fishermen brought families and dogs, making the best of this window of opportunity for ice-fishing.
