Project Reality at PCMS

Port Clinton Middle School students Michael Baxter, Cooper Kowal and Allie Batterton stay after school as part of a project based learning program, “Project Reality”, where students have fun with science.

Science is fun at Port Clinton Middle School. Students even choose to stay after school to learn more about it. Ms. Jennifer Kelly and Ms. Cheryl Halsey, Fleet 6 (grade 6) teachers, organized “Project Reality” for Port Clinton Middle School students in grades 6, 7 or 8 to have fun with science. The Project Reality group meets after school each Thursday for an hour. Students are actively involved in project based learning programs and challenged with a task involving the idea that a local amusement park has hired the PCMS students to design a new ride for their park.

Students were given the problem/challenge to develop the new ride using an eight step model applying simple machines. As experts of simple machines and forces, students in teams of four will design a prototype similar to Rube Goldberg's models. Each team has been busy building the model of their ride along with a multimedia presentation of their project. Students and teachers are eager to show off all the innovative projects to parents during Family Night planned for May 1.
