K. of C. collecting for Measure Up Campaign

Most of the fraternal organizations in the United States have fundraising efforts for their own “flagship” charities. The flagship charity of the Ohio Knights of Columbus has long been the support of citizens with developmental disabilities. On Friday and Saturday, June 1-2, the Oak Harbor K. of C. will conduct the annual “Measure Up Campaign” at Oak Harbor Community Market. This street collection raises funds to provide additional programs and services for people with developmental disabilities.

Joyful Connections raising awareness

Karen Demangos, then executive director of Joyful Connections, was recently honored with the Larry L. Noblitt Liberty Bell Award. The accolade was given by the Ottawa County Bar Association for outstanding service to the community for her work at the supervised exchange and visitation site in Oak Harbor.
“It was very exciting,” Demangos said, but not just for personal reasons. “I’m just glad for Joyful Connections to get this recognition.”
Perfect timing.
May is Supervised Visitation Awareness Month and the local organization is using this — and the representative orange ribbon — to get the word out about what they do. There is a coloring contest, the Rally for the Kids event last weekend in Bassett’s Market parking lot and literature being handed out around town.
The board for Joyful Connections was formed in 2007 as a Leadership Ottawa County class project. Next came bylaws, 501(c)(3) status, the hiring of an executive director and securing the site at 8200 W. Ohio 163, Oak Harbor.
“There was nothing here but junk,” Demangos said.

Village-wide Garage Sale Days coming up

The Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the third annual village-wide Garage Sale Days on June 1-2. Anyone in the Oak Harbor area may sign up, and some of the downtown businesses will be having sidewalk sales as well.
New this year, the chamber will have spaces available at Flat Iron Park for rent for those who live out of town but would like to participate. A 10-foot by 20-foot space will be $20 for Friday and Saturday.
