Clerk of Courts of Ottawa County (1973-1984)
Ann Elizabeth Nelson, a lifelong resident and former Clerk of Courts of Ottawa County, died on Tuesday, April 30, after a short illness. Ann died peacefully at the Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania, three days before her 93rd birthday.
In 1972, Ann was elected Clerk of Courts of the Common Pleas Court of Ottawa County, and she held that office for three 4-year terms until 1984. Before that, she served as Deputy Clerk of the Court for over 15 years.
Ann was born on May 2, 1920, to Christ and Mary (Imes) Nelson. She was an honors graduate of Port Clinton High School’s Class of 1938. She then graduated from Davis College in Toledo. Before her employment with the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court, Ann was employed by Herbrand Corporation in Fremont, and later worked at the Erie Ordinance Depot.
Ann was an active member of the Port Clinton and Ottawa County communities and was involved in many organizations. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Magruder Hospital Auxiliary, and the Riverview Nursing Home Auxiliary. Ann was a 16-year volunteer with the Red Cross at Magruder Hospital.
Ann was a member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club where she enjoyed attending weekend social events and spending time with her friends. Active in local politics, Ann was a member of the Ottawa County Democratic Club. She was also a member of the Port Clinton Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Ann enjoyed art and painting and was a member of the Port Clinton Artists Club. She also enjoyed traveling. She traveled to all but six of the United States, and visited most of northeastern Canada. She took a European tour of 15 countries, and later traveled to the British Isles, Australia, Tahiti, New Zealand and Fiji.
Ann was devoted to her Catholic faith and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton. There, she was a member of the Adult Choir, the Memorial Choir and the Altar Rosary Society.
Ann is survived by her brother, Curtis (Arline) Nelson; her niece, Nancy Nelson; and her nephews, John (Cathy) Nelson and David (Susan) Nelson. She is also survived by her grand-nephew, Kyle Nelson; and her grand-nieces, Lindsay and Claire Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Christ and Mary Nelson; her brother, Marvin; and her sister, Lois.
Friends may visit the family on Friday, May 3, from 4-7 p.m. at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St, Port Clinton. A Funeral Mass will be held at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday, May 4, at 10 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the Immaculate Conception Church. Ralph Marquez, Sr., 65, of Port Clinton, passed away Saturday, April 27, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, surrounded by his loving family. Ralph was born on January 21, 1948, in Port Clinton, the son of Jose and Tiofila (Carrion) Marquez.

Doris M. Brough, 93, of Oak Harbor, died Saturday, April 27, at Riverview Healthcare Campus, Oak Harbor. She was born on August 7, 1919, in Oak Harbor to Fred and Mabel (Leiser) Henry.

Donna Kelley, 78, of Catawba Island passed away peacefully with family on Tuesday, April 23,. She was born on September 7, 1934, in Canton, SD, to Gerritt and Frieda (Johnson) Vugteveen. On August 8, 1959 in Minneapolis, MN, she married John J. Kelley, and he preceded her in death on November 30, 2004. Donna previously worked for more than 20 years as the office manager for Drs. George Optometrists in Port Clinton, starting in 1974. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton and a longtime choir member.
Donna also was a member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club, Catawba Island Club, CIC Golferettes, Port Clinton Swim Boosters & Swim Club, and, for more than 40 years she volunteered for the Magruder Hospital Auxiliary, at times serving as chairwoman for Charity Ball and as the corporate fundraiser. Nothing was more satisfying to Donna than striving for a hole-in-one (which she got), a great hand in bridge, a sail (or race) on the family boat and, most importantly, anything to do with her grandchildren.
Donna is survived by her sons: Mark (Lisa) Kelley of Catawba Island and Kevin Kelley of Rocky River, OH, grandchildren: Grace, Cara, Katie, Clare, Teagan, and Isaac, stepmother: Joy Vugteveen (105 years old) of Rochester, MN, sisters: Mary Halverson of Rochester, MN, and Carol (Leon) Schrage of Iowa City, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews from Massachusetts to Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, and two sisters.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 28, from 2-8 p.m., with family present from 2-4 & 5-8 p.m., at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, April 29, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with prayers offered at the funeral home.
