B-C-S Board: Food for thought

At the Oct. 27 Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education meeting meeting Nyla Denman, food service director, presented to the board a brief overview of what goes on in her department. She reported on food service activities throughout the district and how she interjects fun activities with the students to promote a healthier lifestyle. One of the activities was K-5 students at Carroll Elementary were treated with fire hats and theme lunch boxes along with a presentation given by the Carroll Township Fire Department. She also showed pictures of the elementary school cafeterias where cooks and volunteers had painted the walls to make them more inviting places for our children. Denman also stated that during the economic downturn, free and reduced lunches are on the rise in the district.
Denman will be representing B-C-S and in-house food service at the Ohio School Board Capital Conference in November. By providing in-house food service rather than outsourcing meal preparation to private companies, schools can more easily ensure that children receive hot, nutritious lunches.
