Danbury eighth-graders return from Washington, D.C.

The Danbury Middle School eighth grade class recently took a four-day trip to Gettysburg and Washington, D.C.
The students left the Danbury school parking lot at 6:45 a.m. and spent their first day in Gettysburg, Pa. The group took a battlefield tour when they arrived and went on a guided “ghost walk” through town that evening.
On the second day of the trip, the students arrived in Washington, D.C., where they had tours scheduled at the National Cathedral, Library of Congress and the U.S. Capitol.  They also visited the National Archives, Jefferson Memorial, Franklin Roosevelt Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Memorial.

The third day started off with a visit to the World War II Memorial, followed by a trip to the top of the Washington Monument. After exploring the Smithsonian American History Museum, the students had a tour of the Office of Printing and Engraving. The group then spent time at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum before going to Ford’s Theatre to see where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. The eighth graders then spent time at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum followed by a visit to the White House.  The day ended with a stop at the Pentagon City Mall where the students picked up various souvenirs.
The final day of the trip began with a visit to the United States Marine Memorial (the flag raising at Iwo Jima). The group then went to Arlington National Cemetery where they saw the grave of President John Kennedy and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The students arrived back at the school later that night. The 34 students who shared this experience were Brooke Butler, Alexis Williams, Deannah Edwards, Jessica Jerrigan, Michelle Stech, Olivia Swartz, Alyssa Biro, Elizabeth Bush, Kaitlyn Pennington, Heather Spears, Jetta Gerber, Alyssa Almendinger, Katie Almendinger, Cassidy Rhodes, Caitlynn Thompson, Allison Ahrens, Erin Lavelle, Lindsay Mark, David Cunningham, Jonathon McClellan, Zach Tokar, Carl Biro, Cody Dunn, Dominic Manuella, Nick MacGillvary, Zak Miller, Kegan Rakosky, Bobbie Slone, Bailey Calhoun, Eric Dickens, Tyler Dray, Cody German, Colin Bush and Alex Ritterbach.
The students were very well-behaved and really enjoyed the experience of visiting our nation’s capital, according to teachers Joe Fetzer and Holly Gast. The adult chaperones included Mitch Connors, Jackie Gerber and Stacey Manuella. The trip was coordinated through Maxine Burnstine of Timely Tours.
