| Ottawa County celebrates Parent’s Week |
Ottawa County celebrated Parent’s Week with a kickoff breakfast in Port Clinton Tuesday, Oct. 20, with 135 community members attending. The event was sponsored by Family & Children First Council and made possible by donations from Brush Wellman, U.S. Gypsum and First Community Church, Gypsum. Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass, alongside County Commissioners Mark Stahl and Steve Arndt proclaimed Oct. 18-24 You Gotta Love Parents Week in Ottawa County.Judge Kathleen L. Giesler of the Ottawa County Probate and Juvenile Courts is the spokesperson for Parent’s Week and emphasized the wonderful job parents and caregivers do with raising the children in our community. Giesler also shared comical bits from what fourth-graders throughout the county said in their essays about “how parents can be better.” Giesler visited 26 fourth-grade classes this fall to talk about Parents Week in Ottawa County and explain the Fourth Grade Writing Contest. Fourth-graders were given the opportunity to write a 100-word essay about what makes a great parent or a letter to their parents telling them why they are special. The winners of the contests, as well as their families, were recognized at the Kickoff Breakfast. Winners include: Alexis Williams, Devona Mutchler, Leshia McNamara and Ben Netry from Allen Elementary School; Delayna Laurel, Cora Kirk, Merissa Jagucki, Alex Koskela, Kayla Collins and Isabelle Rospert, from Jefferson School; Breanna Coffman, Kaitlyn Allgier, Jeremy Smith and Jacob Smith from Woodmore Elementary School; Carolyne Croy from St. Boniface School; Gwena Market from Put-in-Bay School; A.J. Savona from Immaculate Conception School; Lily Bishoff and Jaydan Perkins from Danbury Local Schools; Justine Vinson, Aidan Callahan, Tyler Laughlin and Abby Dornbush from R.C. Waters Elementary; Abigal David from Graytown Elementary; Abigal Decker from Carroll Elementary; Samantha Sarnes from Rocky Ridge Elementary. The winning essays may be read on www.ottawacountyjuvenilecourt.com or by visiting the local libraries. Each winner received a bag of prizes donated from local business. Nagoya Japanese Steakhouse, Monsoon Lagoon, Island Adventures, Pizza Hut, African Safari Wildlife Park and 5J Charter Services donated the grand prizes for winners in the drawings. Magical entertainer Greg Carson provided entertainment for the morning. Community leaders, school officials and parents and grandparents were present to recognize and celebrate people raising children and to promote the role of positive parenting throughout the county. The Parent’s Week Committee consisted of co-chairs Kathy Booher from OSU Extension and Lori Clune from Probate/Juvenile Court, Judge Kathleen L. Giesler from Probate/Juvenile Court, County Commissioner Jim Sass, Marcia Jess from OSU Extension, Ralph Yoss with Family & Children First and Cate Knipp from WSOS.
