Allen Richard Gulau, 92, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30. He was born May 11, 1930, in Danbury, to the late Melvin and Lorena (Wohlers) Gulau. Allen married the former Joann Hopp Oct. 19, 1957, in Bay City, Mich. where they met at the Coast Guard Station where Al was stationed. Following high school Al joined the United States Navy and then transferred directly into the United States Coast Guard. After 26 years of service, Al retired from the Coast Guard as Lt. Commander. Following his passion for flying, Al became a flight instructor, teaching many people how to fly. In his spare time Al enjoyed hunting, fishing and classic boat restoration. In 1985-1986 Al and Joann built their own retirement home in Au Gres where he spent the remainder of his years.
Allen is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joann, and his 3 sons; Ron (Ann) Gulau, Jere (Dianne) Gulau and Dennis (Ann) Gulau; 4 grandchildren, Tyler Gulau, Sara Nackley, Matthew Gulau and Joseph Gulau and 3 great grandchildren, Jack Gulau, Jolie Gulau and George Nakley. He is also survived by 1 brother, Donald (Mitzi) Gulau and 1 sister Betty (Jack) Easton, one sister-in-law Phyllis (Dick) Klender and one niece Kathy Weichman.
According to Al’s wishes, cremation has taken place. No memorial service is planned at this time. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Lee Ramsay Funeral Home-Standish Chapel, Standish, Mich.
