HELLO WYLIE, AND ALL OF YOUR FISHY FRIENDS!
Is Catawba Island one of the windiest places in Ohio? Sometimes it feels like one of the windiest on Earth!
Thank you, Deborah Carden
WELL, HOWDY DEBORAH!
Since The Beacon’s editor, D’Arcy Egan, has fished every nook and cranny of Lake Erie over more than a half century, as well as boated the wide waters and hunted its shorelines and marshes for waterfowl, we swam over to his East Harbor haunts to find out just how windy Catawba Island is throughout the year.
The Catawba Peninsula, in his opinion, is pretty darned balmy!
The big Nor’easters that race over from Canadian waters are actually blocked from blasting Catawba Island because of the protective Lake Erie Islands and Kelleys Island to the north and northeast. The Cleveland, Lorain and Fairport Harbor areas are much windier, and Ohio’s home for winter lake effect snow and blizzards.
Western Lake Erie’s shallower waters are slower to cool at this time of year, resulting in a longer growing season for all of the orchards and vineyards on Catawba Island and Ottawa County.
HAVE A WONDERFUL SWAMMY WEEK!
WYLIE WALLEYE AND HIS LAKE ERIE FRIENDS
