B-C-S tax levy falls 55 votes short

An emergency level to generate $1.5 million for the Benton-Carroll-Salem Local School district fell short on Tuesday, Aug. 6 by 55 votes, less than 1% of the number of votes cast. The final tally on the failed levy was 1,422 to 1,367.

B-C-S officials were pleased a new Ohio law has prevented the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant from closing in 2020, and will still provide tax revenue for the school district. The FirstEnergy power plant was devalued in 2017 by the Ohio Department of Taxation, however, cutting B-C-S tax revenue in half.
That could mean another attempt to pass a school levy or force the school district to make further cuts.
