Bataan Memorial Primary Second Grader Ali Volmar, shows her pen pal correspondence. Students are pen pals with residents at The Vineyard on Catawba.
In past school years, second grade students in Jennifer Keeton’s classroom write letters to pen pals in other classrooms at Bataan Memorial Elementary School. With the events of the pandemic this year, Keeton had an idea to reach out to the Vineyard on Catawba residents to begin a pen pal program with her students.
The students benefit by writing letters and working on language skills. Students are very excited when letters arrive from their pen pals, and the residents at the Vineyard on Catawba have done a wonderful job corresponding with students. Letters have asked if they like to read and their favorite color. Residents of The Vineyard write about their pets, including the swans that swim in the pond on the Catawba campus.
