Bernard “Bernie” Tibbs, 83, of Port Clinton, Ohio and Bermuda Run, North Carolina passed away Dec. 21. He as born in Bluefield, West Virginia in 1936, graduated from Port Clinton High School, Class of 1955, where he played football, baseball and basketball.
He is survived by his wife: Connie and sons Dr. Jeff Tibbs (Sherry and grandson Seth), Dr. Todd Tibbs; sisters Volita Reifsnyder (and children Bob and Bill), Glenda Phillabaum (and children Jamie, Volitta, Diane, John and Leah) Shelley and Rick Asmus also Melissa and Noah Neiderhouse as well as lifelong family friend Doug Millinger.
Bernie loved sports. He coached his sons in Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball. He was an avid golfer and competed 25 years in the Annual Elks Tournament in Pinehurst, North Carolina. He was proud to have played the historic Old Course at St. Andrew’s and Carnoustie. Both courses hosted numerous British Open Championships. He also enjoyed walleye and perch fishing with Bob Wood, Wes Druyor and Jim Semon.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, having served on Church Council and as an Usher. He retired from the Port Clinton Post Office.
A memorial service will be held this spring to celebrate Bernie’s remarkable life. Charitable donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital which was Bernie’s favorite charity.
