The Reverend Father Robert Kelly, of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church of Marblehead, engages in the Blessing of the Waters on the Feast of the Theophany on Sunday, Jan. 6 on the shoreline of Lake Erie. The feast day commemorates the revealing of the Most Holy Trinity to the world through the baptism of Jesus by the Holy Forerunner John the Baptist. The Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Marblehead held its inaugural Blessing of Lake Erie on Sunday, Jan. 13 with Rev. Andrew Bartek presiding. While the Blessing of the Lake is a traditional Orthodox church blessing, Sunday’s ceremony was a first for the century-old Holy Assumption Church.
