Boom! ‘Fat Guy’ making fireworks run

Port Clinton Mayor Mike Snider will be on the run to make sure the city can afford this year’s fireworks for the annual 4th of July Celebration at Waterworks Park in Port Clinton. Snider is calling his effort “A Fat Guy’s 4th of July Fireworks Fundraiser,” and will be challenging fireworks fans to sponsor his marathon walk and run at the Port Clinton Fire Station on Monday, May 4.

Snider will begin putting one foot in front of the other at 8 a.m. Sponsors can donate as little as a penny per step or as much as $100 per mile for Snider’s efforts. On-site spectators are not allowed because of the coronavirus rules, but Snider will slug it out on his Facebook Live Page.

The 4th of July Celebration Committee reports that it costs about $10,500 to put on the annual

fireworks show, and there is a current shortfall of about $4,900.

“Should social distancing and gathering restrictions persist through the summer, the funds raised will be held for the 2021 4th of July Celebration,” said Snider.

Checks can be mailed to the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce Foundation, 110 Madison St., Port Clinton, Ohio 43452 with the memo: fireworks. For a PayPal donation, visit historicportclinton.com. Credit card donations can be made by calling the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce (419-734-5503) starting at 8 a.m. on May 4, and until Snider stops walking.

A fire boot will be on the east side of the Port Clinton Fire Station during Snider’s walk for cash donations.
