Catching catfish on a warm lakeside afternoon

Justin Kochensparger of Port Clinton caught this large catfish off the Port Clinton Walkway at Waterworks Park on June 8. He was one of dozens of people who fished off the side of the walkway that day as boats floated slowly past on the Portage River, returning from fishing jaunts on Lake Erie.

The approximately 16-foot walkway provides an ideal space for fishing, strolling and enjoying a unique dual-view of the river and lake. The walkway connects to a path that leads to the

Port Clinton Lighthouse and its adjoining swimming beach. The spot is often filled with picnickers and beachcombers, and it’s a favorite spot for portrait and landscape photographers. The riverwalk is near downtown Port Clinton shops and restaurants.

Although the spot has been utilized by anglers for years, its popularity soared when the $2.3 million walkway was completed in 2022. Most days, it is dotted by fishermen dangling lines above the river, hoping for a big catch like the one Kochensparger made on a warm Saturday, lakefront afternoon.
