Catherine (Kaate) Smith passed away peacefully at home in Oak Harbor on Wednesday, Dec. 19 of natural causes surrounded by her loving family. Kate, 97, was the devoted wife of James D. Smith (96), founder of Northern Manufacturing Company. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Nov. 29.
Kate was the loyal, generous and kind mother of Tim (Valerie Newell), Kelley (Corinne), Daniel (Ruth Anderson), Margery, and Quintin (Donna). She is survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Her eldest son, Stephen predeceased her.
Kate was born in Collingswood, New Jersey and spent many happy summers there vacationing over the years with her family. She graduated from Immaculata College and worked as a hospital dietician before meeting the love of her life, Jim, who was a Navy officer at the time.
Kate never knew a stranger, loved movies and books, and was an avid bridge player. She was proudest of her family, and their successes and intellect. Her favorite saying was “boys will be boys,” a key to raising five boys and one girl.
We will miss most the twinkle in her eyes.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton. A Memorial Service conducted by Father John Missler will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 28, in the funeral home. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor.
