The December calendar for all locations of the Ida Rupp Public Library includes the following:

Friday December 1

Yoga at Ida Rupp, Ida Rupp Public Library; 9:15 – 10:45 a.m.; Adults. Bring a mat, wear comfortable clothing, and bring straps or props if you choose. Please don’t eat one hour prior to the class. This is a gentle class.. No registration required. *Please enter through the West 3rd Street Library entrance. The door will be open beginning at 9 am.

Yarn Wrapped Popsicle Stick Frames, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.; Children. Friends ages 4-12, come create some frames for your favorite artwork or photos! We will wrap popsicle sticks in colorful yarn to create these frames that you can take home. All supplies provided, while supplies last. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

Saturday December 2

Documentary Screening: Join or Die, Ida Rupp Public Library; 2 – 4 p.m.; Adults. Join us to watch Port Clinton native Dr. Robert D Putnam’s newly-released documentary, Join or Die. Ida Rupp Library and the Ottawa County Museum have partnered to present a special one-time screening of the film, which is based on the research initially published in Dr. Putnam’s book Bowling Alone, a thoroughly-researched study on the decline of social connection faced by the American populace, as well as how to reverse the decline. No registration is required. Dr. Putnam is a political scientist, Harvard professor, and National Humanities Medal winner. He was also a Class of 1959 Port Clinton High School graduate and has written 14 books focused on answering big questions regarding American society.

Monday December 4

Monday STEM Explorers, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.; Children. Children ages 5-12 are invited to join Megan at 4:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month to explore a new STEM topic. This month, we will learn the science behind light and color. Children will create a Newton Disk using washable markers. All supplies will be provided, while supplies last. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

Gingerbread Pick Up Kits at EIL, Erie Islands Library; All Ages. Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center and the Erie Islands Library will be collaborating with the Put-in-Bay Recreation Committee again this holiday season to give islanders the chance to design their own gingerbread houses. Our schedule for this event is as follows: December 4-9: Houses will be submitted to library for display. December 11-15 (by noon): Voting for favorite three houses. December 15: Winners announced (Three categories: Children, Teen, Adult). December 18-20: Houses to be picked up from library.

Tuesday December 5

Story Time, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.; Children. Bring your little ones to listen to some stories, sing a few songs, and get wiggles out! No registration required. Theme: soup

Teen Reindeer Games, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3:30 – 4:40 p.m.; Teens. Enjoy an afternoon filled with silly games for the holiday season. Win some prizes and have fun! Snacks will be provided. Grades 6-12

Marblehead Peninsula Writing Group, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7:30 p.m.; Adult. Join the Marblehead Peninsula Writing Group at their bi-monthly (twice per month) meeting! Get feedback on your own writing, provide advice for other writers, and learn more about the craft. This is a supportive group, open to all levels of writers and facilitated by an experienced writing teacher. You don’t have to bring any of your own writing to share; all who are interested in writing are welcome. Diamond Art Christmas Wreath, Erie Islands Library; 5 – 7 p.m.; Adults. Need a fun craft to add to your Christmas decor? Try this beautiful rhinestone wreath (also known as diamond art) to add sparkle to your room! We have the kits for you to complete one 10″x10″ wreath which you can later mount to a frame of your choice. Must register for this event due to limit of 11 kits. Registration begins November 20th.

Mystery Book Discussion, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. December’s Mystery Book Discussion selection is Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson. Registration is not required and new members are always welcome! Copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk following the November 2nd meeting.

Art Market, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; Children & Teens. Arts and crafts…with a twist! This program is geared toward ages 4-18. Every participant will be given an envelope of play money to “purchase” art supplies for their creation. Get introduced to the idea of currency and budgeting, while having a blast creating a holiday gift for a loved one! Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

Holiday Cookie & Recipe Swap, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7 p.m.; Adults. Come to the Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library to share cookies, beverages, and conversation. We’ll provide coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. You bring a plate of cookies and a recipe to share. Everyone goes home with some new treats to try…if they don’t eat them on the spot, that is. No registration required!

Sit and Stitch with Heather, Erie Islands Library; 4 – 6 p.m.; Adults. Join Heather Durdil, creator of the “Spins a Yarn” podcast and knitter extraordinaire, on the first Thursday of each month at the library to work on your yarn project. Knit, crochet, needlepoint, counted cross-stitch… any project is acceptable! No need to register.

Friday December 8

Gingerbread House Ornaments, Ida Rupp Public Library; 2 – 3 p.m.; Adults. Join us to make a gingerbread house ornament for your tree! We’ll be painting terracotta pots for this craft, so be sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on. Supplies will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration required.

Monday December 11

Mindful Mondays, Ida Rupp Public Library; 9 – 10 a.m.; Children. On the second Monday of every month, join us for an hour of mindfulness. Learn about meditation, the benefits of coloring, and deep breathing. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

Vineyard Book Discussion, Ida Rupp Public Library; 1 – 2 p.m.; Adults. Visit Ohio Living Vineyard on Catawba for a monthly book discussion group meeting in the Community Room. No registration required. Anyone is welcome to join this book discussion. Participation is not limited to those living at the Vineyard. Discussion title: Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead by Emily Austin

Postcard Painting, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.; Teens. Pick out a postcard and add to the scenery with paints. You can add anything you want. Monsters? Ghosts? Reindeer? Let your imagination run wild! Snacks will be provided. Grades 6-12

Gingerbread Houses: Judging, Erie Islands Library; All Ages. All gingerbread houses submitted will be on display at the Erie Islands Library from Monday, December 11th through Friday, December 15th at noon. All patrons entering the library will be encouraged to vote. We are hoping to announce the winners on Friday afternoon, December 15th. Prizes for three age groups (Children, Teen, Adult) can be picked up at the library after winners are announced. This event in conjunction with Lake Erie Nature and Wildlife Center and the Put-in-Bay Recreation Committee.

Crafting With Magoo Adults. Mason Band Christmas Wreath, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7 p.m.; Adults. Don’t have that special wreath for your door yet? Come make a Mason Band Christmas Wreath. It will be really fun and easy to make and you don’t have to worry about it drying out or getting ruined by the weather outside. Registration is required and opens November 28. Each person must register separately.

Book Folding: Christmas Tree, Erie Islands Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; All Ages. Want to make your own Christmas Tree just by folding the pages of a book? Join Librarian Marcia Ashley as she shares how to make a unique Christmas Tree from a book. Limited embellishments will be available so bring some from home if you’d like. We will have the books on hand for you to fold. No registration necessary.

Wednesday December 13

Afternoon Story Time, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4:30 – 5 p.m.; Children. Is your child in school all day, and can’t make it to regular story time? This story time is for you! Come to be read to, sing some songs, and get some wiggles out! Playtime afterwards is also encouraged. No registration required.

Lake Erie Winds: Holiday Concert, Ida Rupp Public Library; 6 – 7 p.m.; All Ages. Join us for a holiday concert featuring local woodwind quartet Lake Erie Winds! They will play a wide variety of seasonal classics for listeners of all ages to enjoy. No registration required!

Interactive Family Movie, Ida Rupp Public Library; 12 – 1 p.m.; All Ages. Come to the library to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992; rated G; 1hr25m). Snacks provided, but feel free to bring your own! This program is interactive, with prompts to follow along with the movie! Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. This flick is suitable for all ages, and the program is geared towards families. No registration required. Synopsis: The Muppets’ version of the Dickens holiday classic about a miser who’s visited by three ghosts features Kermit the Frog as the penny-pincher’s hardworking and loyal employee. Monday December 18

Interactive Movie Bucket, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; All Ages. Want something to do as a family this holiday break? Register for “The Muppet Christmas Carol” Interactive Movie Bucket. Registration is Required and opens December 4. Let us know how many will be watching so we can have enough materials for everyone. You do have to have an active library card to check out the movie that is in the bucket. Or if you already have the movie, or can stream the movie, let us know and we can still make up a bucket for you. Call the library at 419 798 0477 for help. Buckets available from December 18 until 21.

Otterbein Book Club, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 1 – 2 p.m.; Adults. The Otterbein Book Club is open to anyone; you do not need to be a resident of Otterbein to participate. December’s book: The Education of Little Tree, by Asa Earl “Forrest” Carter. No registration required.

Gingerbread House Contest: Pick Up Houses, Erie Islands Library; All Ages. All participants are asked to pick up their gingerbread house entries by 2 pm on Wednesday, December 20th. New Year Vision Boards, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. Come to the library to create a vision board for 2024! Vision boards are a collection of images or objects arranged in a way to help you manifest your goals. Whatever your resolution is for the new year, creating a vision board is the perfect way to solidify your goals and remind you to keep working toward them. We will have a variety of magazines, books, and cardstock to work with, but feel free to bring along any images you have that you’d like to add. No registration required!

Friday December 29

Imagination Hour, Ida Rupp Public Library; 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Children. Spend an hour using your imagination and having fun with friends. Megan will be in the beach room with toys, a marble racetrack, dress up clothes, blocks, and puppets. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is not required.

A-Mazing Marble-Head Race, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Children. We’re holding the first-ever A-Mazing Marble-Head Race. We’ll have plenty of supplies on hand for Kids four and older to make their own marble mazes AND then try out their creations by racing marbles down the chutes. No reservation required. Ages four and older. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
