Cornell, Smith fall just short of the state tournament

NORWALK — Port Clinton didn’t see any of its five wrestlers qualify for the state tournament, but the Redskins had a respectable showing, finishing tied for 23rd place with 20 points in a 46-team field. Buckeye won with 211.5 points.

Josh Cornell, wrestling at 106 pounds, finished sixth, falling one match short of qualifying for state. He won his first match and lost his second before getting pinned by Columbian’s Dallas Glenn in 2:39. Cornell then defeated Streetsboro’s Aidan Carone, 8-6, before falling to St. Marys Memorial’s Tate Hisey by pin in 37 seconds.

Samari Smith (285) lost his first match but won three consecutive matches before losing to Bellevue’s Brock Nunez, the top seed by fall in 3:06, coming up one match short of qualifying for the state tournament. Smith three victories were a pin of Akron’s Buchtel’s Jayden Lewis in 2:18, a 5-4 win over Memorial’s Braden Saeler, 5-4 and a 20-7 win by major decision over Ashland’s Hayden Hensel.

Skyler Cornell (113), William Jackson (126) and Dagan Meyers (190) fell short of winning a match.

    Joshua Cornell did not loose to Glenn. Joshua pinned Glenn in 2 minutes and 39 seconds. His losses were to Anthony Rocco from Bay 13-4 then Hisey in 37 seconds then lost again to Rocco from bay 9-3 in his finals match for 5th place
