Austen Smith, D.O., recently joined Firelands Physician Group with Donald Cundiff, M.D. Both physicians practice in the weight management clinic at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky. Dr. Smith is an obesity medicine specialist, and focuses on helping patients develop a lifestyle to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. His focus is on treating obesity and related comorbidities. His medical interests are in nutrition, exercise and heart-healthy habits.

“Medicine has granted me the opportunity to not only add years to a patient’s life, but life to their years,” said Dr. Smith. “I practice what I preach, and outside of work you can find me biking along the waters of Lake Erie, at the gym, or enjoying a healthy meal, such as salmon and beets.”

Dr. Smith’s hobbies include all forms of exercise, recently rucking (walking or hiking while carrying a weighted rucksack or backpack); reading non-fiction; birdwatching; and connecting with family and friends.

He earned his doctor of medicine at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his family medicine residency locally at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Dr. Smith also completed fellowship training in obesity medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.
