PORT CLINTON – Grade eight students at Port Clinton Middle School recently completed an engaging lesson on local myths and legends. As part of the curriculum, the students read Ghosts and Legends of Lake Erie’s North Coast by Port Clinton High School alumna Victoria King Heinsen.

The lesson was further enriched by guest speaker Diane Roziak-Thompson, who shared her expertise on local myths and legends. Her presentations on the Surf Motel and Johnson’s Island offered students a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural significance of these tales.

To culminate the lesson, students and Fleet 8 teachers embarked on a walking tour of downtown Port Clinton on Oct. 31. This excursion allowed them to visit numerous locations featured in Heinsen’s book, bringing the stories to life and connecting them with the community’s heritage.

What was the student’s favorite story and landmark? Students really liked reading the story about the courthouse and looking for the gargoyle statue near the clock tower.
