Firelands Presbyterian Church will host its kickoff speaker for the new Firelands Caregiver Support Group on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., featuring Rhonda Hill, a former counselor for the Port Clinton City Schools.

Hill will be sharing the wisdom and knowledge she gleaned from 18 years as caregiver for her late  husband, who suffered from debilitating Alzheimer’s Disease. As a woman with first hand experience, Rhonda will offer practical advice for those who find themselves in the position of caretaker, and as a  trained counselor, she will offer unique insights into the psychology of caregiving,

If anyone is currently a caregiver, have ever been a caregiver or are simply interested in supporting the caregivers in their lives, join the Firelands Caregiver Support Group at Firelands Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd. Call Anne O’Malley at 440-488-3055 or Carol Clemons at 419-732-0644 with any questions.

In a community that is aging, more and more people find themselves in the position of being caregivers for loved ones. The Pastoral Care Committee at Firelands Church identified this need and is creating a flexible format for caregivers who would like support in their endeavor of caregiving.

Often helpers are over-burdened and can’t imagine making one more commitment to anyone or anything. But self care is critical if caregivers desire to stay healthy and helpful, and connecting with others with similar concerns can be lifesaving. These meetings are designed to be held once a month from 7- 8:30 p.m., and caregivers can attend meetings that suit their schedule.
