SANDUSKY — The Firelands Symphony Orchestra (FSO) presents two free “Fiesta Mexicana” family concerts that feature songs that pay homage to Mexican and Latinx composers, music and culture. The first performance is Saturday, April 30 at Perkins High School Auditorium. The second is on Sunday, May 1 at Norwalk High School Auditorium.

Hands-on children’s crafts and musical activities begin at 3 p.m., followed by a full orchestra concert at 4 p.m. These events are free and open to the public, thanks to generous support from Randolph J. & Estelle M. Dorn Foundation, Ohio Arts Council, and Perkins Sponsors, The Lange Trust of Sandusky Library, The Sam S. and Rose Stein Foundation, and Michelle Wightman – Karrie Wieber Charitable Foundation; and Norwalk Sponsors, The Geotrac Foundation and Civista Bank

These free concerts feature a variety of song styles, from classic to popular music. The full orchestra, under the direction of Carl Topilow, will also be joined with a special performance by dancers from Viva Dance Studio.

The orchestra will perform songs that pay homage to various composers of Mexican and Latinx heritage, including Gabriel Musella, Quirino Mendoza y Cortés, Pascual Marquina Narro, and more. This vibrant program also includes songs from popular music, such as Tito Puente’s Oye Como Va, and a medley of Gloria Estefan’s greatest hits. Also included are other Mexican style orchestrations from the likes of Robert Wendel.

Prior to each concert, the FSO will be hosting musical arts & crafts for children. Families are encouraged to come early to enjoy the festivities, which include making your own musical instruments to take home. In keeping with the theme of Fiesta Mexicana, children can create and decorate their own working maracas and tambourines to get them excited about the concert program and encourage musical play and exploration at home.

The FSO is no longer requiring COVID-19 vaccination or testing checks, and face coverings are also optional for all guests Since April 1. Seating is first come, first serve. More information can be found at firelandssymphony.com/events or by calling the FSO office at 419-621-4800 (Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
