Doug Bort, Founder and Lead Investigator of Odyssey Global Consulting, will be the Catawba Island Historical Society’s spring speaker. His presentation is titled Fakes and Forgeries: Discover How an Art Detective Unravels the Truth.

Bort spent twenty-one years as a Special Agent with the United States Customs Service and Homeland Security Investigations. He is a Subject Matter Expert in the investigation of art and cultural property crime. In addition to having conducted several complex international investigations and undercover operations, he has trained many other law enforcement personnel on how to investigate this category of criminal activity.

His presentation will explore how some of the most successful forgers fooled the expert community, and how to detect fakes and forgeries when examining artworks. Knowledge gained from experts with decades of experience in the field to determine whether an object’s authenticity may be suspect will be discussed. Aspects of provenance information that may raise suspicions will be revealed.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, at the Catawba Island Township Community Hall at 3307 Northwest Catawba Road. It is free to the public.
