Huron Sports Academy to open Aug. 14

The former Shawnee Elementary School at 712 Cleveland Road East in Huron will become the Huron Sports Academy, a public charter school for competitive sports and academics. Huron Schools sold the building for $1.6 million in 2023 as a part of its consolidation plan. The Shawnee Elementary School students were transitioned to the Woodlands Elementary School.

The Huron Sports Academy will be open to early kindergarten through fifth-grade students in Huron and the surrounding areas. The Huron Sports Academy will be operated by ACCEL Schools which is an organization that operates 92 public charter schools with most located in the Midwest. ACCEL is a public school, so it will be tuition-free for students and families.

Huron Sports Academy Superintendent Chad Carr said that the Huron Sports Academy will bring the students’ seasonal sports practice into the school day while maintaining academics. Currently, the school is open from kindergarten to the fifth grade, but Carr has hopes of adding all grade levels in the future. The first group of students will arrive on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Registration has started, and 30 students have signed up.

Carr is hoping to get 100 students with the intent of having 20 students per classroom. If there are more than 100 students registered, the academy will hire more teachers. There are currently six hired teachers. The teachers at the Huron Sports Academy are qualified through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
