The August calendar for all locations of the Ida Rupp Public Library includes the following:

Tuesday August 1

  • Marblehead Tech Help, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 3 – 4 p.m.; Adults. Need help with a smart phone, tablet, computer, or other device? Sign up for one of our 30-minute one-on-one Tech Help sessions at the Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library. Sessions are free, but you must register, either online or by calling the branch at 419 798-0477.
  • Clemons Cemetery Walking Tour, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6:30 – 8 p.m.; All Ages. This tour takes place on the grounds of Clemons Cemetery. The tour will educate about Clemons Cemetery, its interred, the cemetery restoration process, and the preservation of these local treasures. The terrain of the cemetery is unlevel grass. The tour will last about an hour. For this tour we meet at the cemetery. No registration required.

Wednesday August 2

  • One-On-One Tech Help, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. Call Ida Rupp Public Library at (419) 732-3212 to schedule a 30-minute help session.

Thursday August 3

  • Mystery Book Discussion, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. Mystery Book Discussion is The Island by Adrian McKinty. Registration is not required and new members are always welcome! Copies of the book will be available following the July 6 discussion.

Friday August 4

  • Artist Trading Cards, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3 – 4 p.m.; Teens. Teens entering grades 6-12, make miniature art pieces to trade with friends, family, and fellow artists! Use various kinds of materials to decorate your trading card, as long as the piece measures 2.5” by 3.5.” All supplies provided, while they last.
  • Story Time at the Marblehead Lighthouse, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.; Children. Visit Marblehead Lighthouse for a fun morning of stories & a craft. The first 30 minutes will be dedicated to preschool children & their caregivers. At 11:30, school-aged children will have a story session just for them.

Saturday August 5

  • Family Movie, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; Families. Come to the library to watch Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018; rated PG). Bring a blanket to sit on, if you’d like! Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. This flick is suitable for all ages, and the program is geared towards families. No registration required.
  • It’s Tea Time!, Erie Islands Library; 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.; All Ages. Looking for something to do on a Saturday morning? We are going to host a tea. We will have a variety of tea served in vintage cups and baked goods to enjoy while you spend time with a special person. Join us for a relaxing morning! Due to the limited number of place settings, we ask that you sign up ahead of time. Walk-ins will be welcome as long as supplies are available. Registration starts July 15th at 8 a.m.

Monday August 7

  • Grab & Go Kit: Waffle Cone Ice Cream Painted Flower Pots, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; Children. Stop in and pick up this month’s Kid Grab & Go Craft Kit while supplies last. These DIY Waffle Cone Ice Cream Painted Flower Pots are simple to make and are the perfect summer decoration to satisfy your sweet tooth. Limit one kit per patron. Available while supplies last!
  • Books & Brews, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6:30 – 8 p.m.; Adults. Visit Wee Willy’s to talk about your new & old favorite titles! Each month we also have a genre goal. For this meeting, we have decided to begin to read across America. This month we will focus on books set in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. No need to register.
  • Investing Basics with Debby Parker, Erie Islands Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Adults. Investing Basics: Five Steps to Building a Disciplined Investment Strategy introduction to investing concepts and strategies such as: goal setting, diversification, risk and reward, discipline and momentum.

  • Diamond Art Bookmark, Erie Islands Library; 4 – 5:30 p.m.; Adults. Join Librarian Betsy McCann to add a sparkle to your life! Betsy will have all the materials you need to create a beautiful crystal bookmark. She will get you started on this craft, and you can take it home to finish. Limited to ten people. Registration begins Tuesday, July 25th.

Wednesday August 9

  • Build-a-Tent Challenge, Ida Rupp Public Library; 2 – 3 p.m.; Children. Children ages 4-12 are invited to explore STEAM properties by building a tent with marshmallows and toothpicks, and seeing if it stands! Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required.
  • Friends of the Library Book Sale – Members Only, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4:30 – 7 p.m.; All Ages. Friends of the Library Members are invited for a special members only night. If you’re not a friend, but want to take advantage of the early book sale hours, membership applications will be available at the door. Individual memberships are $10.00 and family memberships are $15.00.
  • Drop-In Craft & Play, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 10 – 11:30 a.m.; Children. Stop by the Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library to complete a craft and play with our range of cool hands-on activities (puzzles, markers, Legos, blocks, marble racing mazes, etc.). No registration required. Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Pulitzer Prize Book Club, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; Adults. Visit Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library to read & discuss a Pulitzer Prize winning book. Now is your chance to read one and discuss it with a lively group! This month the group will discuss The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx. No registration required.
  • Art with Morgan, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7 p.m.; Children. Using airdry clay and acrylic paint, budding artists will create a trinket catchall. All materials will be provided. Registration is required and will open on July 27.
  • Adult Zentangle Coloring, Erie Islands Library, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.; Adults. Looking for something relaxing to do? Living alone and want a chance to socialize? Come to library to meet up with your friends and color your worries away! We have all the colored pencils and many coloring books to choose from. You’re sure to find something that soothes your mind. No registration needed.

Friday August 11

  • Children’s Scavenger Hunt, Ida Rupp Public Library; Children. To get the answer to a joke, 9 letters will be hidden in the Children’s area from August 11th to August 22nd. Find them all and win a small prize! No registration required.
  • Friends of the Library Book Sale, Ida Rupp Public Library; 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.; All Ages. Join us on our final day of the book sale. Everything you can fit into a bag is $5.00 per bag!

Saturday August 12

  • Learn to Play Wingspan, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 12 – 2 p.m.; All Ages. Learn to play the popular board game Wingspan. No experience required. Though the program is listed as for adults, anyone twelve or older is welcome to join us. Registration is required because the game works with a maximum of five players. Registration opens on July 29.

Monday August 14

  • Vineyard Book Discussion, Ida Rupp Public Library; 1 – 2 p.m.; Adults. Visit Ohio Living Vineyard on Catawba for a monthly book discussion group meeting in the Community Room. No registration required. Anyone is welcome to join this book discussion. Participation is not limited to those living at the Vineyard. Discussion title: The Tobacco Wives by Adele Myers
  • Preschool Story Time, Erie Islands Library; 10 – 11 a.m.; Children. Join Librarian Karen Wilhelm for a half hour of reading, song and a craft to take home. Parents and caregivers are asked to stay with their children. No registration required.

Tuesday August 15

  • Story Time, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.; Children. Bring your little ones to listen to some stories, sing a few songs, and get wiggles out! No registration required. Theme: Camping
  • Tuesday Morning Book Club, Ida Rupp Public Library; 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.; Adults. Visit R Coffee Corner to discuss this month’s book! This month’s title is Acts of Violet by Margarita Montimore. Pick up a copy of the book at the public services desk. New members always welcome! No registration required.
  • Marblehead Tech Help; Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 3 – 4 p.m.; Adults. Need help with a smart phone, tablet, computer, or other device?   • Marblehead Peninsula Writing Group, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6 – 7 p.m.; Adults. Calling all writers! No matter whether you’re a beginner or an “old hand” at writing, and no matter what type of writing you do–fiction, poetry, non-fiction, whatever–you are welcome to join our monthly writing group. We’ll treat this first session on August 15 as an organizational meeting, so the details of how future sessions will be scheduled and conducted will be evolving as we go. The writing group will be organized and moderated by Dave Kimmel, branch manager at Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library. Before his library gig, Dave taught writing of all kinds for 28 years at the college level. No registration required.
  • Realistic Fish Painting, Erie Islands Library; 5 – 7 p.m.; Adults. Painter Sarah Cochran will be in the house to share the joy of mixing acrylic paints to paint your own Lake Erie fish on canvas! Realistic! Registration is required and limited to 18 teens and adults beginning two weeks prior to class, Tuesday, August 1st.

Wednesday August 16

  • Adventures in Writing, Ida Rupp Public Library; 2 – 3 p.m.; Children; Children ages 7-12 are invited to join us for an informal writer’s workshop. We welcome any experience level, and this is a perfect opportunity for beginners to dabble in creative writing and hang out with peers. Participants will be able to share some writing samples from our session; however, sharing is not required. Writing supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring any favorite notebooks or writing utensils you’d like. No registration required. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

Friday August 18

  • Work in Progress Crafternoon, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3 – 4:30 p.m.; Adults. Join us once a month on Friday for an afternoon of socializing with fellow crafters and artists. Bring in a project you’re working on to share and work on in a creative space while checking out what others are working on. We will have some supplies on-hand if you want to start a project while you’re here. Supplies dependent on what we have on hand and are while they last.

Saturday August 19

  • Downtown Marblehead Walking Tour, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 9:30 – 10:30 a.m.; All Ages. Visit Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library to learn more about the beginnings of Marblehead. Join us for a walking tour full of interesting facts & stories right down Main Street. This tour is approximately 1.5 miles & takes about an hour. The terrain covered includes sidewalks and paved streets. No registration required. Just show up wearing your walking shoes!

Monday August 21

  • Otterbein Book Club, Ida Rupp Public Library; 1 – 2 p.m.; Adults. The Otterbein Book Club is open to anyone; you do not need to be a resident of Otterbein to participate. Because we’re in transition with our books to discuss (voting time, again), the book for August will be announced later.
  • Poem Locker Magnet, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3 – 4 p.m.; Teens. Teens entering grades 6-12, come to the library to celebrate National Poets Day by creating a unique poem using words, letters, and images you find in magazines. Decoupage a magnet to hang in your locker for when you go back to school! All supplies provided, while they last. In case of rain, join us in our Community Room
  • Grab & Go Kit – Window Box Cross Stitch, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; Adults. Stop in and pick up this month’s Adult Grab & Go Craft Kit while supplies last. Create your own Summer Window Box cross-stitch! Limit one kit per patron. Available while supplies last!

  • Hedgehog Book Folding, Erie Islands Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; All Ages. Have you ever tried the clever craft of book folding? Now is your chance! This is an easy craft! Using just a book, you will fold the pages to create a cute hedgehog. No registration needed.

Monday August 28

  • Navigating Nonfiction, Ida Rupp Public Library; 3 – 4 p.m.; Adults. Ever wonder what nonfiction is all about? Join us each month to review and discuss various nonfiction books on similar topics. Books can be selected from the titles for the NNF book group held behind the information desk. Each month will focus on a different subject area. Before summer is over, learn more about Recreational and performing arts. Hiking, sports, games, movies – there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

  • Jamestown Marblehead Walking Tour, Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library; 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.; All Ages. Join us for a historical walking tour through the Jamestown neighborhood of Marblehead. The terrain is sidewalks & paved streets. The walk will cover approximately one mile & will last about an hour. No registration required. Just show up wearing your walking shoes!
  • Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder, Erie Islands Library; 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.; All Ages. It’s that time of the year when we start to think about feeding our feathered friends, the birds. Join us as we help you to make a colorful bird feeder out of popsicle sticks. No registration needed.

Wednesday August 30

  • Birdseed Mining, Ida Rupp Public Library; 4 – 5 p.m.; Teens. Teens in grades 6-12, join Patricia Dahlie from Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District for a birdseed mining activity. Mining is a complex process in which relatively small amounts of valuable or useful minerals or metals (ores) are extracted from very large masses of rock. This activity will illustrate how this “needle in a haystack” process works. Teens will get to make a bird feeder made from recyclables using a toilet paper tube, yarn/string, peanut butter, and some of the birdseed. All supplies provided, while they last. In case of rain, join us in our Community Room.

  • Family Dance Party, Ida Rupp Public Library; 5 – 6 p.m.; Children. Come join us for a family dance party! Let’s have some fun with music, dancing, and playing rhythm instruments. There will also be balloons, colored lights, a parachute, and popsicles to enjoy. No registration required. Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult.
