On April 27, the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity from the University of Toledo (UT) made a trip to JAG Paintball in Port Clinton for an afternoon of messy fun. The group visited the business many times at its former location in Oak Harbor, and they were looking forward to trying the new site near Camp Perry.

“Nearly every semester, we come here for paintball,” said UT student Auston Gerow. “We have a lot of fun. Playing in the woods – that was definitely my favorite memory.”

The men can haul their paintball guns into the trees at JAG’s new location, too. JAG’s paintball field adjoins 13 acres of woods that are separated into three playing sections.

“We have forts and different things built in the woods for the players to hide behind,” said Jeff Hartlage, who co-owns the business with his brother, Greg Hartlage, and their friend, Dan Donich. “We also have two speedball fields.”

JAG opened at Camp Sabroske in Oak Harbor in 2015 and moved to its current location in April, 2023.

“At first, it was just us having fun and then making it a business and getting more people to play,” Jeff said. “It turned into something bigger.”

Jeff said the men rent the playing field from Paul Gottron of Gottron Construction, who helped with the transition to his land and even sided an outbuilding for their use. The new location offers customers more playing space.

“Paul has been really great,” Jeff said. “It’s a better location, there’s more traffic, and it’s easier to find. I definitely like it out here.”

JAG is open the third Saturday of every month April through November and by appointment for private parties.

“We have open play on the third Saturday of every month. Anybody can come and play. You can bring your own gun or rent one,” Jeff said. “We open at 9 a.m. and games start by 10.”

JAG can be rented for private events, including birthday, bachelor and office parties.

“I charge a flat fee of $60 per person, and that includes everything – a gun, mask, paint and air,” Jeff said. “They can play whatever games they want and are welcome to bring their own food.”

JAG bills itself as Ottawa County’s only paintball field, and Jeff has plans to make it even better.

“We’re trying to build more things and do more things,” Jeff said.

JAG is located at 5760 Lakeshore Dr. in Port Clinton. For more information, call 419-707-1751 or visit www.jagpaintball.com.
