Janice A. Russell, age 83 of Monroe, Mich., formerly of Port Clinton, passed away Thursday, April 14, at Elderly Solutions. Jan was born on April 2, 1939 in Monroe, Mich., the daughter of the late Andrew I. and Dorothy C. (Thoma) Meyer. She graduated as Valedictorian, class of 1957 from Airport High School in Carleton, Mich.

On Oct. 19, 1968, Jan married John T. Russell at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Carleton and moved to Port Clinton. He preceded her in death on March 31, 2004.

Jan worked at Carleton National Bank until she moved to Port Clinton where she began a 30-year career at Huntington National Bank, retiring on March 1, 1997. She then worked as a secretary at Peace Lutheran Church, bookkeeper and secretary at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and volunteered at the Gift Shop at H.B. Magruder Hospital, all in Port Clinton.

Jan was a dedicated member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was a member of its Altar Rosary Society, served as a Prayer Partner administering Holy Communion to the sick, member of the Memorial Choir, chairman of the Bereavement Luncheon Committee, served as Sacristan, and worked bingo. She previously served as Treasurer for the Ottawa County Holiday Bureau, Easter Seals, Salvation Army, and the Altar Rosary Society. She was nominated Knights of Columbus Lady of the Year in 2007. Jan was also a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, distributing food to the needy, and recent member of St. Michael Catholic Church since returning to Monroe four months ago to be near her family.

When she wasn’t serving God or others, Jan enjoyed team bowling and western square dancing. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and her many friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include: brothers, Donald (Mary Ann) Meyer and William (Joann) Meyer, both of Carleton, Mich., and Gary (Laurie) Meyer of Eyota, Minn.; sisters, Rosemary (Robert) Vajcner, Karen Glover, and Lorraine Bressler, all of Monroe, Mich., and Connie (Robert) Aman of Rochester N.Y.; sister-in-law, Bette Jo (Mike) Miley of Sylvania; 23 nieces and nephews; 36 great nieces and nephews; and 6 great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jan was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Jerry Glover and John Bressler; great-niece, Kathryn Grace Taft; and great-nephew, John B. Taft, IV.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Apr. 22 at Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd., Monroe, MI 48161, where the Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Jan will lie in state at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church, 502 W. Front St., Monroe, MI 48161. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by the church pastor, Rev. Fr. Kishore Battu followed by burial at Roselawn Memorial Park in LaSalle, Mich.
