When Jen and Shawn Swiczkowski of Guy & Doll Flooring and Decor met, Shawn was an experienced flooring expert, and Jen was a trained artist who formerly worked as a graphic designer at American Greetings. Shawn’s business partner had recently stepped away from the flooring industry, and Shawn needed help.

“I thought, ‘I can do that,’” Jen said. “So, he taught me how.”

Today, Jen handles power tools as comfortably as any man. She works side-by-side with Shawn on flooring projects, where she uses table saws, chop saws and large paper cutters. Any woman, she believes, can learn to do the same.

“I always tell women, ‘You work with big knives in the kitchen. It’s just learning how to use them,’” she said. “Did you give birth? That’s so much scarier than using tools.”

Now, Shawn brings 32 years of experience to the business, and Jen has worked with him for the last eight. At Guy & Doll, they offer luxury vinyl plank, laminate and hard surface flooring, carpet and an extraordinary variety of tiles infused with elements like mother of pearl, stone and metal.

“We install tiles in showers and backsplashes. Wall tile is big now,” Jen said. “We like to play with mixed medium in the tile.”

The Guy & Doll showroom in the Port Clinton Plaza has a fun, art deco feel that was inspired by the Swiczkowski’s wedding. The shop is filled with trendy tables, chairs and couches in modern colors and funky styles.

“Shawn and I got married in an art deco movie theater that’s now a banquet hall. It was gorgeous, and we based our shop décor on that aesthetic,” Jen said. “That was fun for us. Who doesn’t want to hang out in a movie theater-looking place all day?”

The artsy feel of the shop isn’t just for the aesthetic. Most of the furniture is for sale. Shawn and Jen placed the first couch in the shop to highlight the flooring, but as they added more pieces, a new element to their business grew. Now, they sell a line of furniture at less-than-retail prices.

“We buy stuff we like. It’s a fun element of the store,” Jen said.

With all that the shop offers – experienced owners, variety of options and unique décor – there is one more aspect of Guy and Doll that is attracting customers: the reliability that naturally stems from being locally owned.

“We show up,” Shawn said. “The last tile job we did – we were their fourth contractor. We finished the job, and they loved it.”

Providing customers with products and service that transform their homes and will last decades is a foundational mission at Guy and Doll.

“We’re not going to put in anything that will fail. That’s our reputation,” Jen said.
