Joan L. Price, 78, of Lakeside, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5. She was born Dec. 24, 1942, in Richmond, Ind., the daughter of Paul and Dorothy (Steinbrink) Mikesell.

Joan taught children for over 30 years. She began teaching in Preble County regular education, but her real passion was teaching special education. She touched many students’ lives while working with the Board of MRDD in Preble County for 20 years. She then traveled to the CNMI to teach special education to students on the island of Tinian. Joan’s experience on Tinian was very special to her and awakened a love of travel. After returning to Ohio, she taught a short time in Montgomery County and then moved to northern Ohio where she taught students with disabilities for EHOESC. After retirement Joan and her longtime friend traveled extensively while continuing to educate and inspire children to appreciate other countries and cultures by putting their travels on a blog and later visiting schools and sharing the love of travel with children in the classroom setting.

In 2011 Joan opened The Fine Print Bookstore in Lakeside. Her love of reading and passion for adventure and travel led to many varied and popular programs at the bookstore.

Surviving are her children: Michael (Melanie) Price of Kettering, Andrew (Jen) Price of Cincinnati, Laura (Neal) Cottingim of Eaton; grandchildren: Robbie, Riley, Sarah, Lucas, Daniel, Drew, Nora, Zachary; siblings: Don (Mattie) Mikesell of Port Charlotte, Fla., Anne Mikesell of Hilliard, Susan (Mike) Mabrey of Mobile, Ala. and longtime friend: Bev Bartczak.

Services for Joan were held at the Memorial Garden at Lakeside Chautauqua Sunday Sept. 12.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakeside Chautauqua to help create a permanent storybook trail in Cherry Park in memory of Joan. Please include in the memo of any donation “Joan Price Memorial Storybook Trail.” Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.neideckercrosserpriesman.com. Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Peninsula Chapel is handling the arrangements.
