John “JD” Jones, 94, of Port Clinton, passed away, Sunday, Dec. 30, at H.B. Magruder Hospital.  JD was born on Dec. 27, 1924 in Cheatham County, Tenn., the son of John A. and Effie (Bishop) Jones. He lived on a farm in Clarksville, Tenn. and graduated from Clarksville High School in 1942. JD joined the U.S. Navy, in January 1943, serving in the American and Pacific theatres as an aircraft mechanic, discharged in November 1946. He earned a BS from Austin Peay State College then received a MA from George Peabody College in 1951.

JD began his career as a teacher in Hopkinsville, Ky. and Cumberland City, Tenn., where he taught biology, chemistry and general science, and was a coach.  He later decided there was a better way to earn a living. He joined the Insurance Company of North America as a safety inspector.

JD then joined U.S. Rubber (later called Uniroyal) working in Milan, Tenn., Mishawaka, Ind., Washington, Ind. and Port Clinton. He held a number of jobs in production management and in industrial relations and retired from Uniroyal in 1989 after 36 years. In retirement he was a volunteer AARP tax aid for 22 years.

JD was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Port Clinton, and a member and past president of the Port Clinton Lions Club. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and watching sports. JD will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory are: Loving Wife of 63 years: Patricia A. (Tait) Jones; Son: William T. (Sandra) Jones; Daughter: Carol L. (Kent) Amsberry; Grandchildren: Will and Grant Amsberry.  JD was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Alton Jones and Leonard Jones and sister: Lucille Fletcher.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.  Interment will be in Catawba Island Cemetery, Port Clinton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of JD may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 135 Adams St., Port Clinton, OH  43452 or Ida Rupp Public Library, 310 Madison St., Port Clinton, OH  43452.  Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton, OH, assisted the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made to the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
