John P. “Pete” Spieldenner, age 88, of Port Clinton, OH, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. He was born May 23, 1935 in Fremont, OH, the son of Paul E. and Theresa M. (Pauken) Spieldenner. He was raised in Fremont and graduated from Fremont St. Joseph High School in 1953. On June 16, 1962 he married Carolyn Tight at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fremont. She preceded him in death. They were married for 59 years.

In 1954-55 he attended the University of Toledo. John was drafted into the U.S. Army and served 1958-60 in Hanford, WA at the headquarters of the Nike Ajax missile installation there. From 1955 to 1958 and again from 1960 to 1979 he was employed at the Paul E. Spieldenner Co. in downtown Fremont in floor and wallcovering sales. In 1979, the company acquired Young’s Floor Covering in Port Clinton, OH and John became manager of that store, which he ran until his retirement in 2001.

John was a member of the Rotary Club, first in Fremont and later in Port Clinton where he also served as president. He was also a member of the Moose, Elks, and Colonial clubs in Port Clinton, and he served on the Board of Directors of Magruder Hospital for five years. His hobbies included golf. He was a member of the Fremont Country Club as a young man. He also enjoyed watching sports, including watching his children participate in various high school sporting events.

John is survived by his children, Lisa (Ted) Johnson of Port Clinton, Steve (Kim) Spieldenner of Toledo, OH, Paul (Carolyn) Spieldenner of Normandy Park, WA, and Peter (Lisa) Spieldenner of Port Clinton; his sister Mary and brother-in-law James Weller, sisters-in-law Beverly (Thomas) Spieldenner and Pat (Charles) Spieldenner, and his brother in-law Joseph (Carolyn) Ruble, as well as his 3 step-grandchildren: Bo (Rachel) Henry, David (Chelsea) Johnson, Bryan (Tyler Marie) Johnson, and their 11 step great grandchildren, and by his 11 grandchildren: Molly, Emma, Mark, Joseph, Aaron, Marie, Karen “KJ”, Ray, Olivia, Spencer and Lily Spieldenner; He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers James, Thomas, and Charles Spieldenner, his sister Carolyn (Joseph) Ruble, and his sister-in-law Mary (James) Spieldenner.

The family would like to thank the caregivers who so lovingly cared for John in recent years.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home, 216 Washington Street, Port Clinton, OH 43452 on Monday, September 18th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 19th at 11 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison St, Port Clinton, OH 43452 where visitation will be held one hour prior from 10-11 am. John will be laid to rest at a private service in Saint Joseph Cemetery in Fremont, OH.
