The Meals on Madison area in downtown Port Clinton has just about something for everyone, but Annie Head wants to make sure area kids are not left out of the fun times this summer. With funding from attorneys Victor Kademenos and Adrienne Hines, a new Kid Zone will provide enjoyable programs and games.
“We’re eager to create programs that will entice families to bring the kids to the MOM area on Mondays and Thursdays for a little stimulation, and a lot of enjoyment,” said Head, a Port Clinton Middle School Teacher and head of the Drama Club.
“We want the kids to enjoy programs such as Storytime with Mrs. Taylor, a teacher who will read stories to them in an animated way. Or enjoy a Chalk Art session on Madison Street, and perhaps learn more about the wildlife around us.”
The program is designed for children as young as 4 or 5, or as old as 11 or 12. The Kid Zone won’t babysit kids, though.
“Kids attending one of the sessions must have parents or guardians nearby,” said Head. “Parents and grandparents will have the chance to get a snack or a drink from the nearby businesses, and have the opportunity to watch the kids having fun and learning new skills.”
Volunteers and financial support are also needed. Contact KidzoneMOM@gmail.com with donations, availability and ideas.
“Our plans call for engaging kids and their creative energy, and keeping things fresh,” said Head.
Starting this month, there will be two Kid Zone classes each week on Monday and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. To keep things fresh, the 5 p.m. class will be repeated at 6 p.m.
“Limiting each session to about an hour will keep children connected, and kids can come and go as they please,” said Head. “It’s easier to plan an hour-long activity for these age groups.”
Session 1 will be held on Mondays in June, while Session 2 will be held on Monday in July.
Programs being considered include a fitness obstacle course, which could include jump rope, yoga or dance. Sensory bins to stimulate the chidren. Science night, arts and crafts night and puzzle night are also options.
