LAKESIDE – The Lakeside Heritage Society (LHS) will host a Recycle Sale over Memorial Day weekend. The annual sale has a long history in the community.
The LHS Recycle Sale has been in operation for more than 50 years. It was started by one of the LHS founders, Eleanor Durr, who held an auction on her porch at 416 Maple Ave. every Memorial Day and Labor Day for over 20 years. Beginning in 1969, the proceeds of the auction went to the newly formed Lakaeside Heritage Club.
Over the years, the auction turned into a sale that supports the LHS mission to preserve and promote the history of Lakeside, the Marblehead Peninsula and the Chautauqua Movement in America.
Since one person’s discard is another person’s treasure, the sale is “recycling” and supporting a great cause, all at the same time.
The Memorial Day Weekend Recycle Sale will be held in the South Auditorium and begins on Friday, May 23. An early bird admission of $5 on Friday morning allows attendees to get a head start on shopping from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Admission to the sale is free on Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free the remainder of the weekend, which includes Saturday, May 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, May 25, 1 to 4 p.m.; and Monday, May 26, 9 a.m. to noon.
Visitors to Lakeside may ask for a 2-hour free shopping/dining pass that will be validated at the sale.
