Boats for both transportation and recreation have always been important to Lakeside. This photo from 1923 shows boats providing regular service between the islands such as the Lakeside III (center left at dock) and the larger steamer at the end of the dock (Chippewa).

Also pictured are a large variety of smaller boats used for fishing, pleasure excursions and recreation. A small rowboat built in Lakeside is among the small recreational crafts in the foreground.

Historical photos and models of early steamers and recreational boats are displayed at the Lakeside Heritage Hall Museum at 328 Maple Avenue in Lakeside. The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. Admission to the museum is free. Visitors to Lakeside may ask for a 2-hour free shopping/dining pass that will be validated at the museum.
