Larry M. Carstensen, 77, of Catawba Island, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Admiral’s Pointe Nursing Facility in Huron. He was born in Jan. of 1944, in Port Clinton, the son of the late Arthur and Evelyn (Meyer) Carstensen. He graduated from Port Clinton High School in 1963. On May 27, 1972, he married Carol Braden who preceded him in death on Feb. 7, 2015.
Larry was a tool and die maker at the former Ford Motor Company in Sandusky for 34 years until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, Catawba Island; member of the Port Clinton Elks and member of the former Moose Lodge; member of the Middle Bass Yacht Club, where along with his wife, he enjoyed many seasons of boating and socializing with friends. He was also a member of the Catawba Island Volunteer Fire Department. After retirement, he was a resident of Catawba Island in the summer and a snowbird in Everglades City, Florida in the winter. He was an avid boater and experienced fisherman, having taken numerous trips throughout all five of the Great Lakes, as well as in the waters surrounding Everglades City. He was always helping people and enjoyed working with his hands in his shop and on many other projects. He even built his own home on Catawba Island.
Larry will be remembered as a caring and loving father, companion, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Survivors include his daughters, Stephanee Moore (James O’Brien), Sebastian, Fla., and Laura Carstensen Devore (John Hennessy), Sarasota, Fla.; and son, Philip (Jody) Carstensen, Catawba Island; grandchildren, Joshua (Amy) Hatfield, Aaron (Amber) Chapman, Gabrielle “Brie” Chapman, Sarina Mckown-Goh (Anthony), Benjamin (Michelle) Mckown, Tyler Carstensen, Marissa Carstensen; great-grandchildren, Reese Hatfield, Leith and Corbin Roberts, Myra and Olwyn Chapman, Victoria and Kingston McKown-Goh; sister, Mary Sue Keller, brother-in-law Bruce Braden (fiancé Margaret Dalton); companion, Suzie Hartenfeld; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carol, sons, Martin Carstensen and Greg McKown, brother, Don Rider and sister, Sharon Zerbo.
Visitation will be held at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2370 NE Catawba Road, Port Clinton, on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. until Funeral Services at 11 a.m. with Pastor Christopher Boyd officiating. Immediately following the funeral service, a Celebration of Life luncheon will be held at Catawba Community Hall, all family and friends are welcome. Following a private burial ceremony, the family will join in the celebration.
