Local athletes find success in swim and basketball

The high school Swimming State Championships D – II were held on Friday, Feb. 23 in Canton. Port Clinton’s Kami Periat finished second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the backstroke, which she won as a junior. Periat broke the school record with a time of 50.94 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Periat has a pair of state second-place finishes plus three third-place medals. Periat plans to attend the University of Minnesota.

“Kami will go down as the most decorated Port Clinton female swimmer in school history, hands down,” Port Clinton coach Dan Diaz said.

Perkins High School seniors Jager Ninke, Jacob Collins, Landon Williams and Jake Savage placed seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and Ninke finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in Friday’s State Swimming Championships in Canton.

Oak Harbor’s Austin Sorg won a state title and set a new record time of 48.06 seconds in the State D-II 100-yard butterfly at the State Swimming Championships in Canton. Sorg would also finish fifth in the 500-yard freestyle.

Sandusky senior Jayde Gowitzka is also a state champion as she won two girls’ para-division races, the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke at the State Swimming Championships in Canton.

The Sandusky Blue Streaks Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the Norwalk Truckers 62-57 on Friday, Feb. 23. With this win, the Sandusky Blue Streaks became the first team in the Sandusky Bay-Lake Conference to go undefeated. The Blue Streaks are 21-1 and 10-0. The Sandusky Bay Conference began its current three-division format starting with the 2017-2018 season.

The Margaretta Polar Bears (19-3 overall and 9-1 conference) won over the Edison Chargers (6-16 overall and 2-8 conference) by a score of 72-61 on Friday, Feb. 23. This will give Margaretta a share of the Sandusky Bay-Bay Conference, their second title in three years.

It was Senior Night for the Huron Tigers on Friday, Feb. 23, and they went out with a win, defeating the Port Clinton Redskins 67-36. The Huron Tigers record is 9-13 overall and 4-6 in the Sandusky Bay-Bay Conference. The Port Clinton Redskins are 6-16 overall and 2-8 in conference games.

The Perkins Pirates downed the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes 49 -44 on Friday, Feb. 23 in a Sandusky Bay-Lake Conference game. Perkins is 15-7 overall and 6-4 conference while the Tornadoes are 9-13 overall and 4-6 conference.
