The Margaretta Polar Bears Boys Varsity Basketball team lost to the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans (24-3) by a score of 57-43 on Saturday, March 16, in the Division III Regional Final game played at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green. Margaretta finishes the season with a record of 24-3 which set a program record for wins. Margaretta finished the season as co-Sandusky Bay Conference – Bay Division champions, which is the fourth league title in the school’s history, and won the program’s fourth district title. Margaretta also won their first regional game since 1932.

Margaretta trailed early in the game 8-2 in the first quarter but mounted a comeback following a timeout to close the gap to 13-11 at the end of the first quarter. Margaretta was hurt by turnovers as the Titans were able to score 16 points. Margaretta was unable to capitalize on the Titan’s five turnovers. For the Titans, it was Colin White scoring 26 points along with 11 rebounds. Margaretta battled back to briefly take the lead 15-13 in the second quarter but was unable to maintain the lead as the Titans were on top 28-23 at halftime.

Into the third quarter, the Titans added four more points to their lead. For Margaretta, Julian Washington scored 15 points. Gage Bodey and Kale Bailey had three-point goals. Bodey made the record books by becoming the first Margaretta boy to play in two regional tournaments, first as a sophomore and this year as a senior. Micah Groot was the second senior in the game. At the end of the third quarter, the Titans led 46-32. Margaretta was outrebounded by the Titans 34-25. Bodey summed it up best by saying “I hope they know it can be done.”

“We’re here and ready to win. This is going to be the new normal for us,” Bodey said.

With the OHSAA going to a seven-division format next season, Margaretta could be in Division V. Going into next season, Margaretta looks to be favored to repeat as champions.
