Margaretta earns Division III District Champion title

The Boys Division III District Final game between the Margaretta Polar Bears (23-3) and the Genoa Area Comets (18-7) was on Saturday, March 9. The Polar Bears were victorious 59-47 and are the Division III District Champions. This is Margaretta’s second title in the last three years and their fourth overall, joining the 1928 and the 1932 teams. The Margaretta Polar Bears record of 23-3 also set a single-season record for Margaretta Boys Basketball.

In the first quarter, Genoa held the early lead 11-6. Margaretta would respond by scoring the first 15 points of the second quarter. They held the lead at halftime 28-14. In the third quarter, Margaretta had increased their lead 40-20 with Judah Keller, Tate Bailey, Tyson Bailey and Julian Washington leading the scoring blitz. At the start of the fourth quarter, Margaretta still had a 20-point lead. The Comets could erase that lead margin to just six points thanks to Ryan Routson’s points late in the game. Tyson Bailey, Kale Bailey and Julian Washington each made a pair of foul shots for Margaretta in the closing seconds to put the game out of reach. The Genoa Area Comets finish the season with a record of 18-7. The Margaretta Polar Bears will play the Worthington Christian Warriors on Wednesday, March 13, at 6 p.m.

The Girls Division III Regional Final game was on Saturday, March 9. The Ottawa-Glandorf Titans (25-2) defeated the Margaretta Polar Bears (25-3) 45-26. Margaretta was one of the final eight teams remaining in the state, and with their record-tying 25-3 season, the Polar Bears were the Sandusky Bay – Bay Conference champions for the sixth consecutive year, and they won a fifth district championship in the last seven years. This would be the final game for senior point guard Lilly Edwards and senior Eden Palomo.

The Polar Bears got on the scoreboard first, and the game was tied 18-all late in the first half. The Titans’ Carlie Brinkman would give the Titans back the lead which started an 8-3 run to halftime. In the second half, the Titans outscored the Polar Bears 19-5. The Polar Bears made 9 of 35 shots from the floor.
