Former children’s librarian remembered for her love of books and storytelling

Marilyn Panovec, 89, of Lakeside, was a woman of many loves—especially God, her family, teaching, and reading.

Born in Cleveland on July 21, 1936, to Clarence and Helen (Jaburek) Uhlir, Marilyn met her future husband, Alan, in the Broadway Methodist Church choir. They married in 1954 and raised three children: Alan, Toni, and Ron.

Marilyn taught preschool at Broadway United Methodist Church while earning her education degree, later teaching in the Cleveland Public Schools and at St. Stanislaus Elementary. In 1985 she became children’s librarian at the Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton, a position she often called “the best ever.” Her gift for storytelling and love of books made story time a magical experience for countless children until her retirement in 2007.

A passionate advocate for literacy, Marilyn proudly wore her “I’m with the banned” shirt in support of the freedom to read. She volunteered for many years with Reach Out, a mission-focused church camp, and was a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan B.; son, Alan C.; parents; sister, Barbara Weinschreider. Survivors include daughter, Toni; son, Ron (Kay); granddaughter, Taylor; dear friend, Barb McLaury; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of life will be held Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. at Lakeside United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kathy Dickriede and Rev. Rich Thewlis officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the Humane Society of Ottawa County, or your local library.
