Stephanie Kreilick, a Grade 2 teacher at Bataan Primary, collaborates with Tyler Millhouse on his dog sled design as part of a STEM Iditarod lesson.
Students in Stephanie Kreilick’s Grade 2 classroom have been studying the Iditarod Dog Sled Race in Alaska, tracking the sled dog race over the last several weeks. Part of the lesson involved a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) component when students designed their own sled from popsicle sticks and created their “Idit-a-Rock” Dogs.
Also included was a literacy component that encouraged reading. Students participated in “Idit-a-Read” that allowed them top move their sled icon along the Iditarod course based on how many minutes they read.
It was a great way to learn about the great sled dog race over multiple disciplines.
