The NOAA weekly harmful algal bloom (HAB) report has not changed very much in recent weeks. A bloom of Microcystis cyanobacteria is still present in the western basin of Lake Erie. Recent satellite imagery indicates the bloom is present along the Michigan coast to Brest Bay, along the Ohio coast to the Toussaint River, and extending offshore up to 8 miles east from Maumee Bay.
Periods of strong winds were observed over the weekend, mixing offshore surface concentrations in the western basin. Sampling on Sept. 9 indicated toxin concentrations are below the recreational threshold at all locations.
