OHSAA makes changes to division rules

The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Board of Directors voted on Thursday, Feb. 15 to increase the number of divisions from four to seven in boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball and girls’ volleyball. Boys and girls soccer will increase from five divisions to seven divisions. These changes will start with the 2024-2025 school year. There will be 19 additional state champions crowned next year.

These changes will not affect football, which adopted a seven-division setup in 2013, or other team sports, including field hockey, ice hockey, boys and girls lacrosse, and boys volleyball, that have only one or two divisions. The 64 teams with the largest enrollments will comprise Division I in the seven-division setup. The next 64 will be Division II, and the remaining schools will be divided equally among Divisions III to VII.

OHSAA executive director Doug Ute indicated that future state tournaments will likely use the format used in soccer where state semifinals are played midweek at various neutral sites across the state, and the state finals are played at one site later in the week. Preparations have already started, along with working on the details, to prepare for the additional divisions this fall.
