PORT CLINTON – Athletes from the Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities kicked off local Special Olympics events with the annual Torch Run to Put-in-Bay and across Port Clinton on May 18. Several athletes, members of their families, and Board of DD staff rode the Jet Express for a day of fun on Put-in-Bay. They were greeted by a large crowd when they returned to the Jet Express dock, where they enjoyed dinner provided by McCarthy’s.

“It was the best thing for the Special Olympics,” said Kendra Amborski, a Special Olympics bowler. “It’s the best thing for our family and friends.”

The day was a success thanks to the support of the Port Clinton Police Department, the Put-in-Bay Police Department, the Port Clinton Fire Department, Port Clinton Mayor Mike Snider, the Coast Guard, and the Ohio Naval Militia. Heavy storms hit right after the ferry arrived, so, thanks to the Jet Express, the dinner was moved from The District to the Island Port, the indoor event venue at the Jet Express.

On May 20, athletes competed in Special Olympics bowling competitions in Napoleon. Several of the athletes brought home medals.
