MARBLEHEAD – As the world turns its attention to the Winter Olympics, another group of dedicated athletes is preparing for a celebration of sport, camaraderie, and spirited competition -right here in Ohio. This October, Independent Living residents from every Otterbein SeniorLife campus across Ohio and Indiana, including Ottawa County’s Otterbein Marblehead, will gather for the annual Otterbein Olympics, a tradition that blends friendly rivalry with joyful connection.

The event brings together residents from across the region to compete in a full slate of activities, including cornhole, pickleball, shuffleboard, Wii bowling, chair volleyball, and several other crowd favorites. Each competition is designed to be inclusive, energizing, and – most importantly – fun. For many participants, the Otterbein Olympics are a highlight of the year, offering a chance to stay active, challenge themselves, and cheer on friends old and new.

Just like the global games that inspired it, the Otterbein Olympics begin with a full opening ceremony, complete with team entrances, music, and plenty of fanfare. The atmosphere is electric as residents proudly represent their home campuses, wearing team colors and waving banners. Throughout the day, the spirit of teamwork shines as participants encourage one another, celebrate victories, and share in the joy of friendly competition.

The culinary teams also get in on the action, facing off in a campus-versus-campus food competition that has quickly become a beloved tradition. Residents and guests sample dishes from each chef and cast their votes for the top creation. The contest adds a delicious twist to the day and showcases the creativity and talent of Otterbein’s culinary professionals.

Medal ceremonies and a closing celebration round out the event, honoring not only the winners but the collective spirit of participation. The Otterbein Olympics are more than a day of games—they’re a testament to the vitality, enthusiasm, and community that define Independent Living at Otterbein.

Assisted Living and Long-Term Care Residents aren’t left out of the competitive games – Otterbein Marblehead holds their own AL Olympics in the spring right on their campus. These residents participate in some of the same competitive sports, like cornhole and chair volleyball, and a baking competition is included for residents, family members, and staff to get involved.

As the world watches athletes compete on snow and ice this winter, Otterbein Marblehead residents are already training, practicing, and preparing for their own moment in the spotlight. Just like the Olympians on TV, they’ll show that age is no barrier to passion, perseverance, or the thrill of competition.
