From protecting Lake Erie to enjoying Lake Erie, the 18th Annual Progressive Catawba Island Boat Show held on April 26 to 28 featured all things marine. Over 100 power and sailboats were on display, and nearly 100 vendors lined the shore. The show was produced by the Ohio Marine Trades Association (OMTA).

“Of all the shows we produce annually, dealers and attendees alike say this one has a genuine festival atmosphere,” said OMTA President Michelle Burke. “It’s been dubbed by boaters as the official kick-off celebration of the new Ohio boating season.”

Among the vendors selling marine equipment and services were those touting the importance of protecting the lake. Elaine Tso, the new executive director of the Lake Erie Foundation, was at the boat show to promote the organization’s mission.

“We have a focus on three pillars,” Tso said. “We focus on reducing algae blooms, addressing the microplastics issue, and increasing discussion on the topic of wind turbines.”

Tso said the Lake Erie Foundation seeks to educate the public with the most complete information.

“I’ve always cared about the lake being a place you can enjoy, but now it’s at a whole other level after learning about the challenges affecting the lake,” she said.

On the other side of the boat show, artist Brittney Thorne of BKayKreative promoted her unique watercolor services. Thorne offers custom portraits of boats, homes and timeline maps, which are multi-picture paintings that showcase personal journeys of love, family or faith.

“The timeline maps tell a story – a love story, a deployment journey or a grandparent’s story. I also do timeline maps of faithfulness journeys. They show the times that God has been faithful in your life,” Thorne said. “Mainly people do this for weddings, but I’m spreading it out to things l love.”
