The Port Clinton High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has announced the Class of 2019 inductees, which include the 1971 Redskin Football Team, 1998 Girls Tennis Team, the family of Dr. Sandy and Beth McLean, and Kari Kreutzfeld will join the high ranks of PCHS athletes and coaches inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame Induction Dinner will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21.  Inductees will be introduced at the Friday evening football game and inducted at the Hall of Fame Banquet the next evening. Ticket sales will be announced in August. For more information call PCHS at 419-734-2147.

The 1971 PCHS football team earned the first Great Lakes League (GLL) Championship for the Redskins in Football sharing the title with Oregon Clay. Led by first-year head coach Marc McClain, they were 8-1-1 on the season. Only a “Hail Mary” loss at Bowling Green in the waning moments of the game prevented this group from being undefeated.

Ironically, the tie came in the battle with co-champion Oregon Clay. The 1971 season also marked the first year that the OHSAA implemented computer rankings to determine which teams would advance to the state playoffs. While only the top team in each region advanced, Port Clinton spent the entirety of the 1971 season in the top eight of their region.

The 1998 Lady Redskin tennis team completed a 19–1 season. The girls went 12–0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference, capturing the undisputed SBC Championship. In dominating fashion, 14 of the 19 wins were by scores of 5-0 or 4-1.

Three of the girls on the squad earned first team All-SBC honors, a third player earned 2nd team All-SBC. The team advanced three players to the district tournament and one player to the state tournament.  As a team, the Lady Redskins made it to the final eight in the state’s  of Coaches Team Tournament.

The McLean Family is synonymous with Port Clinton Tennis. Nick (2002) earned 109 Wins, 1st Team All-SBC honors, and was a state qualifier.  Tristan (2003) earned 88 Wins, 1st Team All-SBC Honors and 2nd Team All-State.  Jaci (2005) earned 90 Wins, 1st Team All-SBC and was a state qualifier.  Tim (2008) earned 96 Wins, 1st Team All-SBC, and was a state qualifier.

Nick, Tristan, and Jaci McLean all went on to play collegiate tennis and enjoyed outstanding careers.  Dr. Sandy McLean was a volunteer assistant coach for 10 years and his wife, Beth, was instrumental in organizing many tennis-related activities. Both put in many hours during the summer at the Von Thron-Habilitzel Tennis Center in an effort to help sustain Port Clinton’s dominance on the tennis courts.

Kari Kreutzfeld, PCHS Class of 2005, enjoyed a stellar career in track during her four years of high school, earning four varsity letters and remains a school record holder in five events. During her career, Kreutzfeld finished in the top six at the Division II State Track Meet in three separate events, including being a part of a relay that was state runner-Up in 2004 and 2005. Kreutzfeld competed in track at Youngstown State University and was a four-time Horizon League Champion.
