The 2nd annual Rex Rutledge Scholarship Golf Scramble will be held at Oak Harbor Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 19 to provide scholarships to seniors on the Oak Harbor High School golf team.
The scramble will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start, and players can sign up by calling Chuck Benes at the Oak Harbor Golf Club at 419-898-1493, or purchase 50/50 tickets. Last year’s Rutledge Scramble awarded four college scholarships to 2020 graduates.
Entry deadline for the scramble is Wednesday, Sept. 16. Cost is $240 per four-person team, which includes sandwiches and appetizers at the end of the day. There will be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle along with fun events along the course.
Rex Rutledge passed away very unexpectedly on Aug. 28, 2018 at the age of 66. His friends and family organized the golf scramble as a way to honor him and to keep his memory alive. He was a man of great faith who loved to golf, spend time with his family and friends, and laugh and give laughter to others.
Rutledge was an avid golfer and played for many, many years, starting as a young boy playing with his father, Russ Rutledge. He mentored many young players at the Oak Harbor Golf Club, stressing not only the fine points of the game, but also encouraged them to always make the best of themselves in whatever path their lives would take them.
Rex always talked about playing golf in Scotland, and in June of 2018 he was able to fulfill that dream. He was also very active as Director of the BCS Food Pantry. After his death, members of the food pantry started the The Rex Rutledge Memorial Garden to provide fresh produce to the pantry.
