Shawn Coakley, the athletic director at Sandusky High School, is retiring after 12 years. Coakley made the announcement earlier this week. Coakley has over 30 years in public education.

“Thirty-four years is a great career. We’re able to retire, so we’re gonna take advantage of that,” Coakley said.

Coakley’s last day will officially be on July 2. He said that the decision is “bittersweet.”

Coakley was hired as the Sandusky athletic director in 2012, coming from the athletic director position at Clearview High School in Lorain County. Coakley has worked as an athletic director for 21 years. Coakley grew up in West Virginia where he wrestled and played baseball at West Liberty University. At Southern Vance High School in North Carolina, Coakley taught and coached. His wrestling teams won three state team championships.

To be closer to his family, Coakley moved back to Ohio where he has three daughters, and he is looking forward to the birth of his first grandchild this summer. Coakley’s wife, Annette Solet, is the manager of the Mills Creek Golf Course in Sandusky, and she is also retiring. Coakley is looking forward to his retirement so that he can get to things that he has been putting off due to his busy schedule.
