SIMPLE GESTURES up-gifts unneeded goods

SIMPLE GESTURES organizer, Kathy Jo Schweitzer, drops off four large boxes of girls’ clothing at the Port Clinton Board of Education office for Coach Paco Romero to give away during the Port Clinton Girls Soccer Academy.

Kathy Jo Schweitzer, organizer of SIMPLE GESTURES, started her program in 2015 with the purpose of getting everyone in the community to think about organizing and decluttering their homes while sharing any good and useable items that are no longer wanted or needed. Today, she emails over 100 contributors with specific item requests and presents the items directly to families, individuals and children of all ages. Some of the items she has distributed include baby merchandise, pull tabs, kitchen utensils, toys, games, food, small furnishings and decorations.

SIMPLE GESTURES has also provided the opportunity for Schweitzer to learn more about other organizations in the county, including schools, allowing her to discover how SIMPLE GESTURES might be helpful in assisting students and their families.

Even though the men and women in the program usually receive specific email requests from Schweitzer, they are also encouraged to send photos of other things asking if she can find a home for them. Recently, a local grandmother donated clothing no longer needed by her granddaughters, allowing SIMPLE GESTURES to distribute over 700 articles of like-new clothing. Recipients of the clothing were Port Clinton Food Pantry, Portage Resale Center, Port Clinton Girls Soccer Academy and Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center.
