Steven Patrick Gipe of Columbus, formerly of Port Clinton, passed away in the early morning hours of March 28 at Ohio State University Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born on Oct. 4, 1977, to Kenneth and Patricia (Edler) Gipe at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, arriving almost 6 weeks early. He was a 1996 graduate of Port Clinton High School where he was on the swim team, captain and school record holder, and in the band where he played trumpet. He loved marching band season the most. After high school he attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Geology and Secondary Education. At OWU he was a member of the swim team and a captain his senior year. He was also a proud member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He taught at Monroe Middle School and Olentangy High School where he was head swim coach. In the summers he was the aquatic Director/Pool Manager for the City of Bexley Parks and Recreation Department and in 2016 when he left teaching, he became a full-time employee until 2021.

Steve will be remembered most for his sense of humor, his love of Ohio State football and the Chicago Bears (even when they were bad), his love of high school swimming and Lake Erie, and his devotion to his daughters. He was a member of the Central Ohio Swim Officials Association. Steve was preceded in death by his mother Patricia (Edler) Gipe, infant brother Kenneth Scott and stillborn sister, Uncle David Gipe, and grandparents Ken and Mary Gipe and Paul and Helen Edler.

He is survived by his father Ken (Diane Hohman) Gipe, sister Christie (Keith) Kuhlmann, daughters Maura Goldyn Gipe and Adelyn Scott Gipe, ex-wife Sarah (Witkowski) Gipe, nephew and niece Brandon and Katie Kuhlmann, special friend Michelle VanPeteghem, David and Roberta Witkowski, Jacob (Basia) Witkowski, Elisa (Brett) Witkowski, Jared (Hannah) Witkowski. He also leaves behind many aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss his sense of humor and love!

There will be no visitation and a family burial will take place. Steve will be remembered by an account at Commodore Perry Federal Credit Union to be used for his daughters’ ongoing expenses. Donations may be made directly to the credit union for the “Steven Gipe Memorial,” or mailed to Ken Gipe at 103 E. 3rd Street, Lakeside, Ohio 43440. There will be a Celebration of Steve’s life on Saturday July 9, at the Portage Park Shelter House in Port Clinton from 1-5 p.m. Online condolences may be expressed at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.
